Annual Report of the General Secretary - 2011

(For the year 2010-11)

Mr. President and Members of this august gathering,

I heartily welcome all of you to this Annual General Body and Budget meeting today. I have great pleasure in presenting this report before you. The details of the Society's activities and action taken during 2010-11 have broadly been as follows:

  1. The construction of Majumdar Bhawan was the major issue for the whole year and the following steps have been taken to settle the land dispute. As you know we have engaged an advocate Mr. Awdhesh Kumar Singh, dealing with such land cases. He has been paid Rs,50,000/- as advance. He issued notices to Health Department of Govt. of U.P. and the Lucknow Development Authority, Lucknow. Since he did not get any response from the above two parties, he advised us to start the construction. On 4th September, 2010 we started the construction in the site where some senior members of the Society, myself and the advocate were present. The moment we started construction work we were interrupted by a third party who said they have got the lease agreement for the same plot. Then the Gudamba Thana Incharge called us to Police Station. We went there, and the incharge asked us to get it settled from the Tehsildar of Nagar Nigam and then start the construction. We moved to the Tehsildar, explained him our position. Subsequently he sent a letter to the LDA mentioning that said plot is not acquired by the LDA, hence the agreement should be cancelled. However, the Tehsildar Acquisition of the LDA replied back mentioning that it has been acquired. Such kind of correspondence has been happening with us since 12 years. Hence we decided to take the help of some senior officers through whom we could approach the VC of LDA. On 9th of May, 2011 we met the Vice Chairman Mr. Rajiv Agrawal, gave an application mentioning the chronology of the land dispute and requesting him to allot an alternative plot. After running from pillar to post, hopefully we should be soon reaching some solution.

  2. After the constitutional amendments in the last General Body, the President appointed a Standing Committee with Prof. B.R.K. Shukla as Convener and Dr. H.S. Sasksena, Dr. Sudha Rastogi, Dr. Sukant K Chaudhury, Shri P.K. Tewari, and Sri Tarun Khanna as its member. The Committee held four meeting to review the activities of the Society.

  3. Regarding journals: The Eastern Anthropologist is being published regularly. However, Vol.63 got delayed by about 4 months and it has reached the society yesterday i.e. 17th May, 2011. The No.1 issue of 2011 i.e. the Vol.64 is in the final stage, which will come out by end of this month and number 2 will be out by end of July, 2011. The Indian Journal of Physical Anthropology and Human Genetics is delayed because of several factors. However, the editor is trying his best to print the backlogs i.e. 2010 Nos. Manav could not get published for some unforeseen circumstances. However, the editors are pursuing it and have promised that two issues will come out shortly.

  4. The K.S. Mathur Library continues to attract students and research scholars from the University and colleges. However, we could not add any new volume to the library this year, owing to resource crunch.

  5. On the D.N. Majumdar Museum, I am happy to announce that some repairing and maintenance work has been done. I am sure that we will able to revive the museum with its original shape, once we solve the land dispute and construct the building.
  6. Finally, I wish to report that 10 new life members have joined the Society. They are as follows:
