(For the year 2017-18)

Mr. President and Members of this august gathering,

It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to this Annual General Body and Budget meeting today. I take this opportunity in presenting this report before you. The details of the Society’s activities and action taken during 2017-18 have broadly been as follows:
1. You will be glad to know that the Executive Committee unanimously proposed to organize a National Seminar . As you know the convention of the Society is to hold the conferences biennially. However, since members were enthusiastic about it we decided to organize the seminar. there was a consensus on the theme of the seminar: Redefining Concepts: Tribe Caste and Family. As you know the inaugural address was given by Prof. R.K. Jain, Prof. Emeritus CSSS/SSS, JNU and the Key Note address was given by the Prof. S.M. Patnaik, Professor of Social Anthropology, Delhi University and currently is the Vice Chancellor of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar (NAAC A+ University). 146 Research Papers have been approved by the Committee for the presentation in 10 Technical Sessions; there are four plenary sessions in which 16 distinguished delegates would make presentations. Besides there will be one inaugural and one valedictory session. The valedictory address will be delivered by Prof. Madhu Nagla, Deptt. of Sociology, MDU Rohtak University who is also the President of RC-13 of ISA on Sociology of Leisure and the Guest of Honour would be Prof. Shobhita Jain, Former Professor & Head, IGNOU, New Delhi. About 250 delegates have been registered in the seminar, and including the solicited resource persons and other guests we have about 350 participants in the seminar.
2. Regarding journals: I am glad to announce that The Eastern Anthropologist is on its 71 year of uninterrupted publication. The no.1 issue of 2018 i.e. of the Vol.71 will come out by April, 2018. The Indian Journal of Physical Anthropology and Human Genetics is also doing very well. Vol.36 No.2, Dec. 2017 is getting published soon. Society’s third journal Manav is also being published these days regularly: vol.34 of Manav having two issues and the first issue was published in Sept. 2017, and the second issue will come out soon.
3. The K.S. Mathur Library continues to attract students and research scholars from the University and colleges and we are adding some books regularly.
4. The D.N. Majumdar Museum is being maintained with a limited space. Recently we have added some mural paintings. However, paucity of space is a big problem.
5. I wish to report that some of our life members have been invited in the country as well as abroad to deliver lectures, to present papers in conferences and to deliver memorial lectures in India.
6. I wish to report that 9 new life members have joined the Society.
7. With regret, I would like to inform you that some Life Members of the Society passed away: Dr. H.S. Saksena, Prof. D.K. Bhattacharya, Prof. P.K. Seth, Prof. Hetukar Jha, Prof. I.P.
